- ἠιόεις, εσσα: doubtful word, with changing banks, Il. 5.36†. (The above interpretation assumes a derivation from ἠιών, some rivers like the Scamander, in warm countries, with their sources in neighboring mountains, have in consequence of rains a broad rugged bed out of proportion to the ordinary size of the stream, and banks ragged and often high.)
